This à la carte program is composed of bite-sized modules exploring trending topics in the management of type 2 diabetes. The evidence-based, interactive presentation will highlight new recommendations from the Diabetes Canada 2020 Update, including which antihyperglycemic agents are recommended for high-risk populations. Additional topics, based on the preference of the participants, may be discussed. These include: the practical use of SGLT2is and GLP-1RAs; how to choose between SGLT2is and GLP-1RA (and when to consider their combination); the role of combined insulin / GLP-1RA therapy; the role of biosimilar insulins; and preventing and treating severe hypoglycemia.


Program Learning Objectives

  • Explain the new themes and recommendations in the 2020 Update to the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Describe the characteristics of patients most suited for treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors and/or GLP-1 receptor agonists
  • Discuss the practical use of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists
  • Explain the role of biosimilar insulins in clinical practice
  • Define severe hypoglycemia and discuss its prevention and management
